Gandum Village

Gandum Village is an eco village situated in Montemor o Novo, in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Founded by Martina and João, the project combines an eco hotel with a regenerative farm on a 14 hectare estate. Guests can choose from a variety of rooms and housing options, dine on locally sourced products in the on site restaurant, and make use of a co working space. Sustainability informs every aspect of the village’s operation, from its low impact architecture and renewable energy systems to its farm to table food production. Three agroforests have been established to supply nutritious yields while enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem health in this Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

In partnership with Life Terra, Gandum Village has translated its vision for farm regeneration into large scale planting action. Over 20,000 trees representing more than 80 species have been established across multiple zones, with particular attention to boosting local flora, attracting pollinators and wildlife, and improving soil fertility. Employing syntropic agriculture techniques, where plantings emulate the layered structure of a natural forest, Gandum’s agroforests now integrate fruit trees, vegetables, and shrubs in collaborative guilds, increasing resilience to pests and disease while aligning with Life Terra’s hands on approach to community based climate solutions.
