Bingerden Estate

About the project

Located on the banks of the  river IJssel, just outside the historical village of Doesburg, the beautiful Bingerden Estate is one of the oldest preserved country estates in The Netherlands. Its 18th Century English landscape park is a renowned cultural heritage. Besides, the estate has preserved some of the last remaining forests in the area and kept traditional biodiverse hedgerows at some of their agricultural fields. These estate grounds are open to the public, and form a mosaic of landscapes boasting a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Objective

Life Terra has been helping the Bingerden estate to further increase biodiversity for more than 3 years now. This planting season, we will continue to transform some of the least biodiverse agricultural land on the estate into forest using a mix of native species. If enough funding is raised, we can also support planting traditional hedgerows to create ecological corridors.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help restore degraded land with biodiverse forest cover. This will improve soil quality, boost water infiltration,, store carbon for decades and increase landscape value. A particular emphasis will be put on trees that produce fruit and nectar. This will ensure that the newly created forest will foster an extensive ecosystem that will support a variety of animals and will sequester more carbon.

Supporting this project means supporting the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • health
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
  • Partnerships for the goals
