Casas Novas: Biodiverse hedge Portugal

About the project

This project will support the creation of a biodiverse living barrier around a sustainable agroforestry site producing apples, grapes, strawberries, aromatics, and annual crops. By planting a dense mix of 20,000 native trees and shrubs, the project will form a protective hedge that strengthens the overall health of the land.

Following the Miyawaki method, a reforestation technique designed to accelerate natural forest growth, the barrier will increase biodiversity, soil fertility, and resilience against climate extremes and pests.

This approach not only safeguards the agroforestry production but also creates a pioneering model in Portugal where food production and ecosystem restoration work hand in hand.

Objective

The project will see the planting of 20,000 native trees and shrubs across the agroforestry site, designed to weave a natural protective hedge around the crops. This living barrier will help safeguard agricultural activity while also enriching the wider landscape. By using the Miyawaki method, the planting will evolve into a dense and resilient forest in just a few years, capable of adapting to local conditions and providing lasting environmental benefits.

Impact

The creation of this forest will generate multiple layers of positive change. It will strengthen biodiversity by opening new habitats for pollinators, birds, and local wildlife. It will improve climate resilience, supporting healthier soils, better water retention, and natural defenses against pests. Over time, the forest will act as a carbon sink, capturing measurable amounts of CO₂. At the same time, the project introduces an innovative model for Portugal by bringing reforestation and agroforestry together, showing how restoring ecosystems can directly support and coexist with sustainable food production.

How do we measure this impact?

  • Number of trees planted

  • Number of hectares restored

  • Tons of CO2 eq absorbed**

  • Community members involved

  • Students involved

  • Jobs created

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • zero hunger
  • clean water and sanitation
  • responsible consumption and production
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
  • Partnerships for the goals
