Iasi: Popesti project

About the project

Located in the Romanian countryside, close to the city of Iasi, this project aims to improve climate resilience in agricultural areas by creating new biodiverse forests. Although the mountains of Transylvania still contain extensive native forests, the low-lying countryside of Romania has been largely converted to agricultural fields. Due to climate change, the risk of both droughts and flooding in these areas has been increasing. To mitigate these effects, this project will restore native woodlands that will help adapt the area around the village of Popesti to a changing climate.

Objective

Life Terra has been working with Plantam Fapte Bune, a local Romanian NGO, to create climate-resilient forests throughout Romania. By planting a mix of species that should be able to adapt to a changing climate, this project will help increase biodiversity in the Romanian countryside.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help to create new forests in the agricultural areas of North-East Romania. The risk of both droughts and flooding in this region has been increasing due to climate change, so by planting a mix of tree species this project will improve soil quality, boost water infiltration, store carbon for decades and increase landscape value.

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • health
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
  • Partnerships for the goals
