Järna: agroforestry project

About the project

Sweden, one of Europe’s most forested nations, still faces the challenge of diversifying its forests and improving land cover in degraded areas. Life Terra is partnering with 59 Degrees, agroforestry and soil experts, to establish a pioneering dynamic successional agroforestry system complemented by biodiverse hedgerows.

This 2,000 m² pilot project will transform degraded farmland into a productive, biodiverse landscape, serving as a model of sustainable agriculture in cold climates. The design integrates fruiting trees, supporting species, and native hedgerows that act as wind barriers, pollinator corridors, and wildlife shelters - demonstrating how agriculture and nature can thrive together.

Objective

To establish a dynamic agroforestry system and biodiverse hedgerows on approximately 2,000 m² of degraded farmland, planting around 1,000 trees and shrubs

Impact

  • Sequester carbon and contribute to climate change mitigation.

  • Increase biodiversity by creating habitats and ecological corridors.

  • Improve soil health and water retention through regenerative practices.

  • Demonstrate a scalable model of agroforestry for Nordic conditions.

  • Engage the local community in hands-on climate action and sustainability education.

How do we measure this impact?

  • Number of trees planted

  • Number of species planted

  • Number of hectares restored

  • Tons of CO2 eq absorbed*

  • Community members involved

  • Number of planting events

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • zero hunger
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
  • Partnerships for the goals
