Mariënwaerdt, Beesd
About the project
The Marienwaerdt Estate is a stunning estate of over 900 hectares on the edge of the Betuwe village of Beesd. The estate has been managed by the same family for seven generations, but in recent years Mariënwaerdt has suffered the loss of many trees due to the ash dieback disease. This was mainly caused by monoculture forests that we planted in the past. Together with the estate, Life Terra is initiating a Climate Action Project to restore the forests and biodiversity across the estate. Spanning over 50 hectares, the project combines innovative approaches to land restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and community engagement.
Objective
Revitalising former monoculture forests devastated by disease by replanting these area’s with thriving biodiverse forests featuring climate-resilient species.

Impact
By planting a mix of native species on these former monoculture plantations, this Climate Action Project will improve soil health, enhance biodiversity and capture carbon efficiently. Such a forest will be more resilient to both diseases and a changing climate, while providing more niches for species of plant and animal to thrive in.
