La Junquera, Spain

Life Terra is carrying out a carbon sequestration credit project at La Junquera farm, a 1,100-hectare site in Murcia where regenerative agriculture is transforming a semi-arid ecosystem previously degraded by deforestation, industrial farming and water overuse.

This restoration effort is reinforcing soil health, slowing erosion, improving rainwater retention and boosting biodiversity, while also providing long-term value to the landowners.

It further contributes to creating better conditions for local fauna, strengthening habitats in an area that has been under severe ecological pressure.

Projects such as La Junquera are essential to build ecosystems that are more resilient to the effects of climate change and, at the same time, foster the regeneration of rural landscapes.

Plot and tree information

La Junquera is located in Murcia, in the southeast of Spain.

The farm lies within a semi-arid ecosystem that has been severely degraded by deforestation, industrial agriculture, water exploitation and the effects of climate change. Its landowner, Alfonso Chico de Guzmán, is leading the conversion of this 1,100-hectare organic almond and heritage grains farm into a regenerative model.

The trees and shrubs planted will provide several beneficial impacts on the ecosystem and environment:

  • Soil Conservation: trees help prevent soil erosion and conserve moisture and water retention, which is really important in dry areas.

  • Temperature Regulation: trees provide shade and lower surface temperatures.

  • Water Management: Trees play a crucial role in regulating the water cycle by absorbing water from the soil and releasing it into the atmosphere through transpiration.

Tree species

In order to increase biodiversity and to create a mixed and resilient ecosystem, the following species were planted:
